A marine animal belonging to the Chaetognatha phylum, Tachypoda class, Ahymena order, and Aragonidae family. It is less than 4 cm long, has a hard, opaque body. It is a plankton that lives in the surface layer of the northern part of the Northern Hemisphere and has long been used as an indicator of water masses, and its life cycle is also known. The length of one generation varies depending on the ocean area and is closely related to the water temperature of the habitat. In the waters near Japan, it is an indicator of the Oyashio Current. Small numbers have been collected from the deep layers of Sagami Bay, which is evidence that the Oyashio undercurrent reaches Sagami Bay. It feeds on pelagic copepods.

毛顎(もうがく)動物門矢虫綱無膜目ヤムシ科に属する海産動物。体長4センチメートル以下で、体は硬く、体色は不透明。北半球の北部の表層に生息するプランクトンで、水塊の指標種として古くから用いられ、その生活史も判明している。1世代の長さは海域によりさまざまで、生息域の水温と密接に関連している。日本近海では親潮を指標する種である。相模(さがみ)湾の深層から少数採集されることがあるが、これは親潮潜流が相模湾に到達することを証拠づけている。浮遊性橈脚(とうきゃく)類を摂食する。
