A Psalm of Life

He later became a professor of modern languages ​​at his alma mater, and was then invited to Harvard University to succeed George Ticknor as professor of modern languages, before returning to study in Europe. He had already begun to compose, publishing a succession of works, including the prose work Beyond the Sea (1833-34), which exudes the author's European tastes, the autobiographical prose work Hyperion (1839), the poetry collection Voices in the Night (1839), which includes the famous A Psalm of Life, Ballads and Other Poems (1842), the tragic love epic poem Evangeline (1847), based on a true story from the French and Indian War, The Song of Hiawatha (1855), which was based on an Indian legend, and The Courtship of Myles Standish (1858), a love epic set in the early Plymouth Colony.He established an extraordinary reputation as a professor-poet, and also translated Dante's Divine Comedy (1865-67). However, compared to his contemporary JR Lowell, who developed anti-slavery arguments in The Biglaw Papers and other publications, Longfellow's position resembles that of OW Holmes, who Lowell accused of being escapist.
