A state in northeastern Brazil. Area: 98,281 km2 (1.16% of the national land area). Population: 7,445,200 (1995). Capital: Recife. The climate is tropical on the coast and semi-arid inland. Rainfall is 1,250-1,500 mm on the coast and 650-1,000 mm inland, but some areas are less than 500 mm. 88% of the state's area is in an area called the drought polygon, and the vegetation is Cartinga 4%, tropical rainforest 14%, and coastal vegetation 2.6%. Because of the steep slope of the rivers, they become torrents in the rainy season and some of the surface water disappears in the dry season.

ブラジル北東部の州。面積9万8281km2(全国土の1.16％)。人口744万5200(1995)。州都レシフェ。沿岸部で熱帯的，内陸部では半乾燥的である。降雨量は，沿岸部で1250～1500mm，内陸部で650～1000mmであるが，500mm以下のところもある。州面積の88％は〈干ばつ多角形〉と呼ばれる地域に含まれ，植生はカーチンガ.4％，熱帯雨林14％，沿岸植生2.6％である。河川は急傾斜のため，雨季には奔流となり，乾季には一部で表流が消滅する。
