Coquimbo (English spelling)
A port city in central Chile facing the Pacific Ocean. It is located about 400 km north-northwest of the capital, Santiago, on the southwest coast of Coquimbo Bay. Founded in 1850. It is the commercial and industrial center of the surrounding area, with industries such as cement, fertilizer, food, and mineral concentrates. The port is one of Chile's best natural harbors, and is used as a winter base for the Chilean Navy. It is also important as an outer port for La Serena, about 10 km to the east, and ships cement, phosphate fertilizer, and raw and concentrated ores of various minerals such as copper and manganese. The Pan-American Highway and the Trans-Chilean Railway run through the city, connecting it to La Serena, Santiago, and other major cities. Population: 80,961 (1992 estimate).
