A mixture of nutrients such as carbon sources such as glucose, nitrogen sources such as peptone and ammonium sulfate, inorganic salts such as phosphates, and growth factors such as amino acids and vitamins, which are necessary for the growth of microorganisms, is called a culture medium and is used to cultivate microorganisms. A liquid medium is one in which nutrients are dissolved in water, and a solid medium is one in which this is solidified with gelatin or agar.
