1405‐64 The secular name of Pope Pius II (reigned 1458-64). Born into a family of fallen nobles in Siena, he studied law. He became secretary of the Council of Basel and became a follower of the "primacy of the council," as represented by Nicholas of Cusanus. He then became secretary to Emperor Frederick III. He displayed his humanist scholarship, writing many works on history, geography, and poetry, while also being active in diplomacy. He then became a priest, and served as bishop and cardinal of Trieste and Siena before being elected pope in 1458 and ascending to the throne as Pius II.
