School for the Blind - Mougakko

Japanese: 盲学校 - もうがっこう
School for the Blind - Mougakko
A school that aims to provide education equivalent to that offered at kindergarten, primary school, junior high school and high school to blind children and those with severe low vision, as well as to impart the knowledge and skills necessary for the blind. Blind children learn through Braille and auditory teaching materials and tools. The first school was established in Paris in 1784. In Japan, it began with the Kyoto Moua Institute for the Blind and Deaf, which was established by Furukawa Taishiro in 1878. After the establishment of the Tokyo School for the Blind in 1909, education for blind and deaf children was separated. Under the School Education Act of 1947, primary and junior high school education was made compulsory. With the revision of the School Education Act in 2007, schools for the blind, schools for the deaf and special needs schools became special needs schools that transcend the types of disabilities. →Education for disabled children→Related topics: Schools | Blind people | Special needs schools | Deaf schools
