A fish of the pufferfish family. It is found in coastal areas of the Pacific coast south of Fukushima Prefecture, the Indian Ocean, and the Western Pacific Ocean. It mainly inhabits rocky reefs and coral reefs. It has a laterally biased body among pufferfish fish, and is about 15 to 20 centimeters long. Its body color is mainly brownish-brown to grayish-brown, but this varies from individual to individual. It is characterized by small spines on its back and abdomen. It is omnivorous, preying on algae, echinoderms, mollusks, etc. Its ovaries and muscles are non-toxic, but its skin is highly toxic, and its liver and intestines are also weakly toxic.

フグ科の魚類。福島県以南の太平洋岸や、インド洋、西太平洋のなどの沿岸部に分布。主に岩礁やサンゴ礁などに生息する。フグ科の魚類の中では側偏した体つきで、体長は15～20センチメートル程度。体色は主に茶褐色から灰褐色だが、個体により差異がある。背面や腹部に小さな棘があるのが特徴。雑食性で藻類や棘皮動物、軟体動物などを捕食する。卵巣と筋肉は無毒だが、皮膚に強毒を持ち、肝臓と腸にも弱毒がある。
