Eukleidēs (of Megara)

Japanese: エウクレイデス[メガラの]（英語表記）Eukleidēs

A Greek philosopher and mathematician who was a friend of Socrates and founded the Megarian school around 450-380 BC. The author of the Stoicheia is a different person, although he shares the same name. He was influenced by the Eleatic school, and pursued the close relationship between mathematics and philosophy through the problem of the one and the many, proposing his own philosophy that sees logic and mathematics as a method for the advancement and salvation of the soul. For this reason, he can be seen as being in the tradition of the Pythagorean school. No works remain except for fragments. [Onuma Tadahiro]

ソクラテスの友人でメガラ学派を創立したギリシアの哲学者，数学者。《ストイケイア》の著者は同名であるが，別人。彼はエレア学派から影響を受け，〈一〉と〈多〉の問題から，数学と哲学との密接な関係を追求し，論理学と数学を魂の向上と救済の方法とする独自の哲学を提唱した。このことからピタゴラス学派の伝統下にあったと見てもよいだろう。断片以外に著作は残存しない。【大沼忠弘】
