Francesco Severi

1879‐1961
Italian mathematician and central figure in the so-called Italian School of algebraic geometry. Born in Arezzo in central Italy. He studied mathematics under Corrado Segre (1863-1924) at the University of Turin, graduating in 1900. In 1902 he became an assistant to F. Henriques at the University of Bologna, and in 1903 to E. Bertini at the University of Pisa. All three of these men were important figures in the Italian School, and it is believed that the direct influence of these three people greatly influenced Severi's later research.

イタリアの数学者。代数幾何学における，いわゆるイタリア学派の中心人物。イタリア中部のアレッツォで生まれた。トリノ大学でセグレCorrado Segre(1863‐1924)の下で数学を学び，1900年に卒業した。02年にはボローニャ大学でF.エンリケス，03年にはピサ大学でベルティニE.Bertiniの助手になった。これら3人はいずれもイタリア学派の重要人物であり，この3人の直接の影響がセベリのその後の研究におおいに影響したと判断される。
