1879‐1961 Italian mathematician and central figure in the so-called Italian School of algebraic geometry. Born in Arezzo in central Italy. He studied mathematics under Corrado Segre (1863-1924) at the University of Turin, graduating in 1900. In 1902 he became an assistant to F. Henriques at the University of Bologna, and in 1903 to E. Bertini at the University of Pisa. All three of these men were important figures in the Italian School, and it is believed that the direct influence of these three people greatly influenced Severi's later research.
