Anorthosite is a leucogranular rock similar to gabbro and norite, but contains very little pyroxene. It is a coarse-grained rock consisting of more than 90% labradorite or bytunitic plagioclase, with small amounts of augite and orthopyroxene, and in some cases olivine. The name anorthosite was given by Hunt [Hunt: 1863]. Turner suggested that rocks consisting of anorthoclase should be called anorthosite, but this was not used [Turner: 1900, Tomkeieff: 1983]. Other names used for coarse-grained rocks consisting mainly of anorthite are anorthite rock and anortholite. Anorthose is an old French name for plagioclase.
