Reihoku [town] - Reihoku
A town in the northwest of Amakusa Shimoshima, Amakusa County, Kumamoto Prefecture. The main settlement, Tomioka, is located on a sandbar on a land-tied island, and is a good natural harbor and a base for inshore fishing. There is a sea route to Mogi Port in Nagasaki City. Rice, fruit trees, and vegetables are cultivated, and pottery stone is also produced. The coal mine closed in 1975. There are many historical sites related to Christians, including a Christian memorial stone (historic site). Area: 67.57 km2. Population: 8,314 (2010).
