His works that explore the workings of the human spirit, especially faith, are unique in the history of cinema, such as “The Trial of Joan of Arc” (1928), considered the last masterpiece of silent cinema, which depicts Joan of Arc's suffering and the significance of her martyrdom through a series of close-ups that delve into her inner world; “The Day of Wrath” (1944), which recreates the spiritual history of 17th century society with a woman who becomes a victim of witch hunts as the protagonist; and “The Miracle” (1955), in which a woman is brought back from the dead by the prayers of a man thought to be insane.
