…The orchestra first held a concert in 1781 in the newly built Gewandhaus (a textile exhibition hall) in Leipzig, with Johann Adam Hiller (1728-1804) as its first conductor. It is a prestigious orchestra, with Mendelssohn also conducting there, but it was severely damaged during World War II and was restored after the war by Franz Konwitschny (1901-62). Václav Neumann (1920-95) and then Kurt Masur (1927- ) became the permanent conductors. …
