Hiroshi Hamaya
Photographer. Born in Tokyo. After graduating from Kanto Commercial High School, he worked in aerial photography. In 1933, he joined Oriental Photography Industry. After leaving the company in 1937, he became a freelance photographer. In 1940, he joined the photography department of Tohosha at the invitation of Kimura Ihei, and mainly photographed the army and navy for the foreign propaganda magazine FRONT. After the war, he remained in Takada, Niigata Prefecture, where he had evacuated, until 1956, taking photographs. He tried to reexamine postwar Japan from his own perspective. From 1954, he traveled to various places along the Sea of ​​Japan dozens of times, and compiled them into the photo book Ura Nihon (1957), which became his representative work. Since then, his method of recording the Japanese climate from a journalistic perspective has consistently been the core of his work, and the results have been published in many photo books and magazines, including the photo book Japanese Archipelago (1964). In 1955, his work was exhibited in the exhibition The Family of Man at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1960, he signed a contract with Magnum Photos as a contributing photographer. Since the 1960s, he has been very active both in Japan and overseas, taking photographs both in Japan and overseas. He has received many photography awards, including the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award (1958).

写真家。東京生れ。関東商業卒業後,航空撮影に従事。1933年オリエンタル写真工業に入社。1937年退社後,フリーの写真家として活動する。1940年,木村伊兵衛の招きで東方社写真部入社,主に対外宣伝誌《FRONT》のために陸海軍関係の撮影に従事する。戦後も1956年まで疎開先であった新潟県高田にとどまって撮影。戦後日本を独自の視点で見直そうとした。1954年より日本海側の各地を数十回にわたって旅し,写真集《裏日本》(1957年)としてまとめ,代表作となる。以降も,日本の風土をジャーナリスティックな視線で記録する手法は一貫して作品の核となり,その成果は写真集《日本列島》(1964年)をはじめとする多くの写真集と雑誌に発表された。1955年には,ニューヨーク近代美術館で開催された《ザ・ファミリー・オブ・マン(人間家族)》展に出品。1960年,マグナム・フォトスに寄稿写真家として契約。1960年代以降は,国内のみならず海外での撮影も多く,内外で旺盛に活動した。毎日出版文化賞(1958年)ほか写真賞受賞多数。
