Photographer. Born in Tokyo. After graduating from Kanto Commercial High School, he worked in aerial photography. In 1933, he joined Oriental Photography Industry. After leaving the company in 1937, he became a freelance photographer. In 1940, he joined the photography department of Tohosha at the invitation of Kimura Ihei, and mainly photographed the army and navy for the foreign propaganda magazine FRONT. After the war, he remained in Takada, Niigata Prefecture, where he had evacuated, until 1956, taking photographs. He tried to reexamine postwar Japan from his own perspective. From 1954, he traveled to various places along the Sea of Japan dozens of times, and compiled them into the photo book Ura Nihon (1957), which became his representative work. Since then, his method of recording the Japanese climate from a journalistic perspective has consistently been the core of his work, and the results have been published in many photo books and magazines, including the photo book Japanese Archipelago (1964). In 1955, his work was exhibited in the exhibition The Family of Man at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1960, he signed a contract with Magnum Photos as a contributing photographer. Since the 1960s, he has been very active both in Japan and overseas, taking photographs both in Japan and overseas. He has received many photography awards, including the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award (1958). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
