Basidiomycete, Agaricales, Family Zanthaceae. Also called Kakin (house fungus). It attacks lumber in humid places, so caution is required as it is a harmful fungus to wooden buildings. When this fungus attaches to floorboards of a house, the surface may remain unchanged, but the underside becomes very brittle and completely unusable. The fruiting body is soft and membranous, and grows entirely on the back, without forming an umbrella. It is irregular in shape and spreads across the underside of the substrate, yellowish brown in color, and blackish brown when dry, with irregular wrinkled folds and white hyphae surrounding the edges. When raw, it secretes moisture with a moldy smell, hence the name. The fruiting layer forms over the entire fold, and ripe spores are yellowish brown. It is distributed throughout Japan and worldwide. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
