The name of a place near Bholpur in Birbhum District, in the mid-west of West Bengal, northeast India. Shanti means "peace" and Niketan means "home" in Sanskrit, so the place name means "town of peace." It is famous as the location of Visva Bhārati (Indian International University). In 1863, the father of poet R. Tagore opened a religious hall here, and later Tagore himself established a school. Tagore used the prize money from the Nobel Prize in Literature he received in 1913 to run the school, and in 1921 the school developed into a university that aims to promote mutual understanding between the East and the West, and in 1951 after India's independence it became a national university.
