A former town in Higashi-Asai District, northeastern Shiga Prefecture. It occupies the Kusano River basin where the Ane River joins, with lowlands in the southwest. Rice is the main industry, and the town also operates paper and textile industries. The foothills have been developed since ancient times, and Jomon pottery has been excavated here. This is the site of the Battle of Ane River between Azai and Oda in 1570. In February 2006, it was incorporated into Biwa Town, Higashi-Asai District, and Nagahama City. 87.09 km2 .
