A mammalian animal of the order Carnivora and family Canidae. A subspecies of fox found in Sakhalin, Hokkaido, and the southern Kuril Islands. Head and body length is 62-78 cm, tail length 38-44 cm, hind leg length 16-18 cm, and ear length 8-9 cm. It is similar to the mainland Japanese fox, but its hind legs and ears are larger, its coat is a bright orange-brown with few white hairs, and the fronts of its front and back legs are black.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目イヌ科の動物。樺太(からふと)（サハリン）、北海道、南千島に分布するキツネの亜種。頭胴長62～78センチメートル、尾長38～44センチメートル、後足長16～18センチメートル、耳介長8～9センチメートル。本土のホンドギツネに似るが、後ろ足と耳介が大きく、毛色が鮮やかな橙褐色(とうかっしょく)で白い差し毛が少なく、前後足の前面が黒い。
