Kitagi Island

An island in the southwest of Okayama Prefecture that belongs to Kasaoka City. It has an area of ​​7.49 square kilometers. It was once part of Kitagishima Town. The entire island is made of granite, and Kitagi stone is produced there. It was used for the stone walls of Osaka Castle, but stone mining and processing only became popular in the mid-Meiji period. Today, stone mining has decreased, and the main activity is the processing of imported stone. Fishing is also carried out on the island, and it is known as a swimming beach. Ferries and other services run from Kasaoka Port. Population 1,195 (2009).

岡山県南西部、笠岡(かさおか)市に属する島。面積7.49平方キロメートル。かつては北木島町を構成した。全島花崗(かこう)岩からなり、北木石を産出する。大坂城の石垣に用いられたが、石材の採掘、加工が盛んになったのは明治中期からで、現在は石材採掘は減少し、おもに輸入石材の加工が中心となっている。水産業も行われ、海水浴場としても知られる。笠岡港からフェリーなどが通じる。人口1195（2009）。
