A city in northern Fukuoka Prefecture. In February 1963, five cities, Moji, Kokura, Tobata, Yahata, and Wakamatsu, merged to form a city, and the former cities became wards. In April of the same year, it became a city designated by government ordinance. In 1974, Yahata Ward was divided into Yahatahigashi Ward and Yahatahigashi Ward, and Kokura Ward was divided into Kokurakita Ward and Kokuraminami Ward, resulting in seven wards. The city stretches for about 30 km from the Kanmon Straits to Dokai Bay, forming the Kitakyushu Industrial Zone, which is mainly focused on heavy chemical industry, and Kitakyushu Port. In recent years, Kitakyushu's material-based industries, which are known for iron and coal, have been rapidly sinking, and the city is being forced to restructure to include advanced technology industries. It is also a transportation hub connecting Honshu and Kyushu, and is served by the Sanyo Shinkansen, the Kagoshima-Chikuho-Nippo Main Line, the Hitahikosan Line, the Kyushu Expressway, the Higashi Kyushu Expressway, and National Routes 3 and 10. Kitakyushu Airport, which opened in March 2006, is located in Kokura Minami Ward. It has an area of 491.95 km2 and a population of 976,846 (2010). → Related Articles Kyushu Institute of Technology | Hitahikosan Line Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
