French astronomer and physicist. In 1805, he worked on meridian surveying with JB Biot as a member of the Bureau of Longitude. In 1809, he became a professor at the École Polytechnique, in 1830 he became director of the Paris Observatory, in 1831 he became a member of the House of Representatives, and in 1848 he became Minister of Army and Navy in the February Revolutionary Provisional Government. Together with Fresnel, he demonstrated the wave theory of light through experiments on polarized light (1816), conducted experiments on the magnetization of iron by electric current (1820), and made other contributions to optics and electromagnetism, including experiments on the Arago disk. → Eddy currents
