Su Shun-qin (English spelling)
[Raw] Onaka Shofu 1 (1008)
[Died] Keireki 8 (1048)
A poet of the Northern Song Dynasty in China. Born in Kaifeng (Henan Province). His pen name was Zimei. His pen name was Canglangweng. He passed the Jinshi examination in the first year of the Jingyou era (1034). He was recommended by Fan Zhongyan and his father-in-law, the Prime Minister Du Yan, who recognized his talent, and played an active role as a young bureaucrat. However, he was hated by his political opponents and banished for embezzling government property. He built a house in Suzhou called Canglang Pavilion and indulged in the arts. He was pardoned two years later and became the Chief Clerk of Huzhou, but he died before he could take up his post. As a poet, he was under the patronage of Ouyang Xiu, and together with Mei Yaochen, who was also known as "Su Mei," he assisted him in pioneering Song poetry. Reflecting his heroic character, his style of poetry was somewhat rough but unrestrained and powerful, and he was also famous as a calligrapher. His "Collection of Su Xueshi Wenshu" (16 volumes) still exists.
