The ruins are located in northern Iraq, about 20 km northeast of Nineveh, across from present-day Mosul, and were the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. The ancient name was Dur-Sharrukin. It was built in the latter years of the reign of Assyrian king Sargon II (reigned 721-705 BC), and is surrounded by a wall, with a royal palace and temple built on a platform, and a ziggurat at its center. The royal palace is protected by a winged, human-faced, beast-like statue. In this period, the king was the center of power, and the temple was built as an attachment to the royal palace. The winged, human-faced, beast-like statue is decorated with reliefs, and some are decorated with glazed bricks. It was first excavated by Frenchmen V. Pras and Botta in the mid-19th century, and was later investigated by an American team, but the remains excavated by Pras were submerged in the Tigris River during transportation.
