Kabuki script. Historical domestic drama. Six acts. Written by Tsuruya Nanboku IV. Commonly known as "Onna Seigen." First performed in March 1814 (Bunka 11) at the Edo Ichimuraza Theatre by Iwai Hanshiro V, Matsumoto Koshiro V, and Ichikawa Danjūrō ​​VII. The love story of "Kiyomizu Seigen" is rewritten with a female protagonist, using the names of the characters from "Sumida River Stories" and combining them with "Kagamiyama." Hanako, the daughter of the Iruma family, shaved her head and became a nun, Seigen, upon hearing that her fiancé Matsuwaka had died, but he was actually alive and was to marry her younger sister, Sakurahime. After much anguish, she broke her vows and became a wanderer, yearning for Matsuwaka. She was pursued by the villain Sarushima Sota, whom she had long been in love with, but was killed when she refused. The important part is a Tokiwazu dance in the "two-faced" style, in which the ghost of Seigen appears in the same form as Matsuwaka as Matsuwaka, and torments him as he wanders the Sumida River. The beautiful female actor Hanshiro is turned into a nun with a shaved head, creating a perverse beauty that is typical of Nanboku's ideas. In 1956 (Showa 31), Nakamura Utaemon VI was revived.

歌舞伎(かぶき)脚本。時代世話物。六幕。4世鶴屋南北作。通称「女清玄(おんなせいげん)」。1814年（文化11）3月江戸市村座で、5世岩井半四郎・5世松本幸四郎・7世市川団十郎らが初演。「清水(きよみず)清玄」の愛欲物語を、主人公を女に書き換えた作で、「隅田川物」の役名を使い、これに「鏡山」を結び付けた構成である。入間(いるま)家の息女花子の前は許婚(いいなずけ)の松若が死んだと聞いて剃髪(ていはつ)し清玄尼となるが、その松若が実は生きていて妹の桜姫と祝言するので、煩悶(はんもん)のすえに破戒、松若を慕って流浪し、かねてから懸想されていた悪者猿島(さるしま)惣太にくどかれ、それを拒んだために殺される。大切(おおぎり)は「双面(ふたおもて)」形式の常磐津(ときわず)舞踊で、隅田川辺をさまよう松若のところへ、清玄尼の亡霊が松若と同じ姿で現れ、これを悩ますという筋(すじ)。美貌(びぼう)の女方半四郎を丸坊主の尼にしたところに、南北の着想らしい倒錯美がある。1956年（昭和31）に6世中村歌右衛門(うたえもん)が復活した。
