The most important ore mineral of molybdenum. Two polymorphs, hexagonal and trigonal, are known. It occurs in high-temperature or pneumatic vein deposits in acidic plutonic rocks, contact metasomatic deposits (skarn-type deposits), metamorphosed stratified manganese deposits, etc., and appears in quartz veins and skarns along with tungsten, tin, bismuth, and sulfide minerals. Its euhedral shape is hexagonal plate-like, but there is also so-called pylon molybdenite, which is composed of fine crystals. However, it has been found that some of it is a compound in the form of MoCS. There is also a molybdenite-like phase containing small amounts of Cu (copper) and Fe (iron). It is characterized by low hardness and cleavage. Amorphous MoS 2 is a different mineral called Jordisite.
