Actaeon

…Siebold published the Map of Japan in the Netherlands in 1840 (Tenpo 11), but it was not well received because it was small-scale and not very practical. Based on the Treaty of Edo, a surveying fleet led by the Actaeon arrived in Japan in 1861 (Bunkyu 1). The captain of the expedition was surprised at the accuracy of the Ino map, which was held by a guide sent by the shogunate, and after receiving a copy of it, he stopped coastal surveying and only carried out soundings of the nearby waters before returning. In 1863, the Royal Navy Hydrographic Department published the Coastal Map of Japan and Its Vicinity (Mercator projection), which made the true state of the Japanese archipelago widely known to the world. …
