Downhill is an alpine skiing event. Skiers compete for time by skiing down a fixed course with an elevation difference of 800-1000m for men and 500-700m for women, and a distance of about 3-4km. The average speed is over 80km/h, and can exceed 120km in an instant, and the speed is increasing every year. To prevent accidents, wearing helmets is mandatory. For both men and women, it has been an official alpine skiing event since the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics. Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Spain are traditionally strong competitors in both men and women, who are based in the European Alps. No Japanese has won a medal yet.
