…In the mid-9th century, Fujiwara no Michisuke's "Kujodono Ikai" (The Admonitions of the Palace of Emperor Kujo), it is said that the first thing to do after waking up each day is to write down the events of the previous day in a calendar, in case of forgetting something. This shows that the custom of writing in a diary had already taken root among the court nobles at that time. Until the Kamakura period, many of these court noble diaries were written in scroll-style calendars, and because they were written in the space of 2 to 4 lines on the calendar side, they were also called "rekiki." In addition, if the contents could not be written on the calendar side, some continued writing on the back, or wrote on a patchwork of blank paper, and then pasted in documents related to the contents. …

…9世紀中ごろの藤原師輔の《九条殿遺誡》には,毎日起床後まず昨日の事を暦記に注して忽忘に備えよとおしえ,当時すでに宮廷貴族の間にも,日記記載の習慣が定着していたことを物語っている。その公家日記は,鎌倉時代までは巻子仕立ての具注暦に書きつけたものが多く,暦面の2~4行の空白に記載したので,暦記ともいわれた。また記事が暦面に書ききれない場合は裏面に書き続けたり,白紙をはり継いで書き,さらに記事に関連する文書をはりこんだものもある。…
