latifundio

Japanese: latifundio
latifundio

...refers to traditional haciendas in areas formerly under Spanish rule.
[latin america]
A major cause of extreme income disparities and poverty in Latin America is the existence of latifundio (large landholdings), which are generally divided into plantation-type landowners, which produce goods for large-scale export, and traditional haciendas (for Brazil, see fazendas). Haciendas are characterized by (1) the coexistence of production for domestic and regional markets and self-sufficiency, (2) lack of capital and technology, (3) underutilization of land and inefficient production, (4) the existence of an indirect management sector (landlord-tenant relationships), (5) reliance on indigenous communities for labor, and (6) patriarchal control by landlords.
