Ono Zensuke

Japanese: 小野善助 - おのぜんすけ

1831-1887 A businessman from the late Edo to Meiji period.
Born in Tempo 2. He was the 8th generation successor to a wealthy Kyoto merchant family, and worked in raw silk sales and currency exchange. During the Meiji Restoration, he organized the Ono-gumi, which became the new government's foreign exchange agent, and raised huge amounts of funds. In 1873, he founded the First National Bank (the forerunner of the Daiichi Bank), the oldest bank, together with Mitsui Takayoshi and others. He worked with the Mitsui family, but failed in management and went bankrupt in 1884. He passed away on January 23, 1887. He was 57 years old. He was from Kyoto. His name was Tsuyoshi.

天保(てんぽう)2年生まれ。京都の豪商の8代目をつぎ,生糸販売,両替業などをいとなむ。維新時小野組を組織して新政府の為替方となり,巨額の資金を調達。明治6年三井高福(たかよし)らと最古の銀行である第一国立銀行(第一銀行の前身)を設立。三井家ときそったが,経営に失敗し,7年に破綻(はたん)した。明治20年1月23日死去。57歳。京都出身。名は包賢。
