1871‐1943 German horror novelist. He started out as a lawyer, but became disillusioned with the O. Wilde verdict and turned to writing. His best-selling novel was Alraune (1911), which was heavily influenced by Poe and ETA Hoffmann. While in America during World War I, he was forcibly imprisoned as an enemy national, and after that he became a nationalist, writing novels such as The Vampire (1920) and Horst Wessel (1932), which was commissioned by Hitler. However, the latter was banned in 1934, and the film version, which he wrote himself, was never released. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
