Hanns Heinz Ewers

1871‐1943
German horror novelist. He started out as a lawyer, but became disillusioned with the O. Wilde verdict and turned to writing. His best-selling novel was Alraune (1911), which was heavily influenced by Poe and ETA Hoffmann. While in America during World War I, he was forcibly imprisoned as an enemy national, and after that he became a nationalist, writing novels such as The Vampire (1920) and Horst Wessel (1932), which was commissioned by Hitler. However, the latter was banned in 1934, and the film version, which he wrote himself, was never released.

ドイツの怪奇小説家。生業は法律家だったが，O.ワイルド事件の判決を機に嫌気がさして作家に転じた。ポーとE.T.A.ホフマンの影響の濃い《アルラウネ》(1911)がベストセラーとなる。第1次大戦中のアメリカ滞在時，敵国民として強制監禁されて以来ナショナリストに転じ，《吸血鬼》(1920)，ヒトラーの依頼による《ホルスト･ウェッセル》(1932)などを書いた。だが後者は1934年発禁となり，彼自身の脚本による同映画も未公開に終わった。
