A city in southern Kyoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. It is located on the east bank of the Kizu River, and rice, peaches, and pears are cultivated in the alluvial lowlands, while tea is grown on the diluvial plateau in the east. Poultry farming and the cultivation of suburban vegetables such as sweet potatoes are also practiced. A specialty of the city is gold and silver thread, which began in the Edo period. The city is served by the Nara Line, the Kintetsu Kyoto Line, and the Keihanawa Expressway, and houses and factories have been established.
