A city in Surrey, southeast England, United Kingdom. Merged with Ewell to the north to form an autonomous city, with a population of 69,230 (1981). Located in the southwestern suburbs of London, it is a garden city famous for its mineral springs and horse racing. The mineral springs were discovered around 1618 and were used to produce Epsom salt, and in the 17th and 18th centuries it flourished as a resort comparable to Bath to the west. Horse racing began during the reign of James I and became a regular event around 1730. Today, the Derby race, held on the first Wednesday in June at the Epsom Downs racecourse in the south of the town, and the Oaks race on the Saturday of the same week are world famous.

イギリス，イングランド南東部，サリー州にある都市。北方のユーエルEwellと合併して自治都市をなし，人口6万9230(1981)。ロンドンの南西郊外に位置し，鉱泉と競馬で有名な田園都市。鉱泉は1618年ころ発見され，エプソム塩の生産に利用されたほか，17～18世紀には西のバースに匹敵する保養地として栄えた。競馬の方は，ジェームズ1世時代に始められ，1730年ころから恒例となった。現在は，町の南部にあるエプソム･ダウンズの競馬場で，6月第1水曜日に開催されるダービー競馬，また同一週の土曜日にあるオークス競馬が世界的に知られる。
