Interest in the beliefs and customs of ancient peoples dates back to ancient times, as exemplified by Herodotus, but the term folklore itself was first used in 1846 by the British scholar William Thoms. In England, the old customs and beliefs held by the common people were initially considered to be "remnants" of Greek, Latin, or Druidic pagan culture, and folklore was long defined as the "science of remnants." …
