The name comes from the Latin "adventus," meaning "coming" or "coming," and refers to people or denominations who believe that the second coming of Christ will occur soon. They are also called Adventists. The movement has been seen throughout Christian history, but as a denomination it dates back to 1831, when it was started in the United States by a Baptist farmer preacher named William Miller (1782-1849). Miller predicted that, based on his calculations based on the Bible, the second coming of Christ would occur between 1843 and 1844, frightening many people and causing some to sell their property.

ラテン語の〈来る〉あるいは〈来臨〉を意味するアドウェントゥスadventusからきた名称で，キリストの再臨(再来)がすぐにおこることを信じる人々あるいは教派をさす。再臨派ともいう。キリスト教史のはじめからいつの時代にもみられる運動であるが，教派としては1831年，アメリカでミラーWilliam Miller(1782‐1849)というバプティストの農民説教者によって始められた運動にさかのぼる。ミラーは，聖書にもとづく計算によるとキリストの再臨は1843年と44年のあいだにおこると予言して多くの人々を恐怖におとしいれ，財産を売るものもでてきた。
