Orthoquartzite

A siliceous sandstone composed mainly of rounded quartz grains. The spaces between the quartz grains are cemented with quartz. It is thought to have formed on a stable continent in an environment where most minerals other than quartz were weathered and decomposed, or in an environment where only quartz grains were deposited after repeated selection and transportation. It is common in the Precambrian period. In the Shimanto Belt of the Kii Peninsula, a large amount of orthoquartzite gravel has been found in the pebble layer, and it is believed that the source of the gravel was a land mass called the Kuroshio paleocontinent in the southern seas.

おもに円磨された石英の粒子からなるケイ質の砂岩。石英粒子の間は石英で膠結(こうけつ)されている。安定な大陸上で，石英以外の鉱物のほとんどが風化分解するような環境，または淘汰・運搬を繰り返してほとんど石英の粒子のみが堆積するような環境で形成されたと考えられる。先カンブリア時代に多い。紀伊半島の四万十帯ではレキ岩層からオーソコーツァイト礫(れき)が多量に発見されており，その礫の供給源として南方海域に黒潮古陸と呼ばれる陸地がかつて存在していたと推定されている。
