Sweet potato weevil

Japanese: アリモドキゾウムシ - ありもどきぞうむし(英語表記)sweetpotato weevil
Sweet potato weevil

An insect belonging to the family Polytrichum, order Coleoptera, family Polytrichum. A major pest of sweet potatoes, found in the Ryukyu Islands, Ogasawara Islands, and other tropical regions. There are records of its occurrence in southern Kyushu, but it does not appear to have taken root. It is black-brown with reddish-brown prothorax, mesothorax, antennae, and legs. The upper wings shine indigo blue. It is long and slender with a slightly swollen posterior body, resembling an ant. Both adults and larvae feed on sweet potato tubers and vines, and also on seaside morning glory. When these insects feed on the tubers, they give off a bitter taste and an unpleasant odor, making them inedible.
