A lake in northern Finland, near the border with Russia. It has an area of 1,386 km2 and is home to about 3,000 islands and reefs. It is long from northeast to southwest, with a length of about 80 km and a width of about 40 km. The lake surface is 118 m above sea level and its deepest point is 95 m. It freezes over from early November to early June. The lake water becomes the Parts River, which flows through Russian territory into the Arctic Ocean. Finns began to live in the Inari region in the mid-18th century, and until then it was the home of the Lapps. Fishing has been a major industry here since ancient times, and the island of Ukonsaari in the lake was a sacred place where the Lapps would offer sacrifices.
