The period from the beginning of the historical era with the unification of the kingdom to Alexander the Great's conquest of Egypt is called the Dynastic Period, and is divided into 31 dynasties based on Manetho's Histories of Egypt, written in the 3rd century BCE. This division of dynastic periods is still followed to this day, but it is divided into seven periods according to the strength of royal authority (and also the level of civilization): the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom, the First and Second Intermediate Periods between them, and the period of prosperity (Early Dynastic Period) and decline (Late Dynastic Period).
