A medieval samurai family. The family name was Fujiwara. According to the Sonpi Bunmyaku and other sources, Mizutani Jusuke, Kiyoari, and Sueari (Hide) appear in the Kamakura period. Jusuke appeared as an envoy during the Shogunate's Tenchi Saihen Ceremony held between the Ninji and Kangen periods (1240-47), and as a servant of the Shogun Fujiwara no Yoritsune. He also escorted the Shogun to the Hojoe Ceremony at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine (Azuma Kagami). Kiyoari and Sueari appear as members of the Rokuhara Council of Ministers (Sonpi Bunmyaku). There is a theory that their home town was Mizutani-go, Inukami County, Omi Province. There are many instances of Mizutani clan members active on the Shogunate's side in the early Nanboku-cho period, including Mizutani Gyobu-shoyu and Mizutani Hyoe-kuranobu, who appear in the Taiheiki, but their genealogical relationships are unclear.
