Born: November 26, 1864, Wormerveer, North Holland
Died: September 15, 1927, Brussels. Dutch poet. Adopting a Marxist stance, he moved from Social Democracy to Communism, but later came into conflict with the Third International and Lenin. His collection of poems, May (1889), brought a breath of fresh air to Dutch literature. He also published the critical essay Kritiek op de litteraire beweging van1880in Holland (1898-1999, 1908-09).
