Aoidos (English spelling)

Japanese: アオイドス（英語表記）aoidos

A title for professional poets/reciters who appear in early Greek epics such as those by Homer and Hesiod. They would sing rites and elegies at religious ceremonies and funerals, and would also be invited to banquets for royalty and nobility, where they would play the lyre and improvise mythological or heroic tales at the request of guests. Examples include the Trojan Horse and the love story between Ares, the god of war, and Aphrodite, the goddess of love, in the Odyssey. The oral poetry characteristics of Homer's epics are considered to be indebted to the aoidos tradition. Even after the oral poetry tradition had declined, the word aoidos was still used to refer to particularly outstanding legendary poets, as can be seen in Theocritus's Idylls.

ホメロスやヘシオドスらの初期ギリシア叙事詩のなかに登場する職業的詩人＝吟誦者の称。神儀や葬礼において祭祀歌や挽歌を歌うこともあり，また王侯貴族の宴に招かれて竪琴を弾きながら，客人の求めに応じて神話や英雄譚を即興的に物語る技芸をもつ。『オデュッセイア』のなかの，トロイの木馬や，戦神アレスと愛の女神アフロディテとの恋物語は，その例である。ホメロスの叙事詩自体の示す口誦詩的特色はアオイドスの伝統に負うものとみなされている。口誦詩の伝統が衰退したのちにも，特にすぐれた伝説的詩人の称としてアオイドスという言葉が用いられている例も，テオクリトスの牧歌などにある。
