A title for professional poets/reciters who appear in early Greek epics such as those by Homer and Hesiod. They would sing rites and elegies at religious ceremonies and funerals, and would also be invited to banquets for royalty and nobility, where they would play the lyre and improvise mythological or heroic tales at the request of guests. Examples include the Trojan Horse and the love story between Ares, the god of war, and Aphrodite, the goddess of love, in the Odyssey. The oral poetry characteristics of Homer's epics are considered to be indebted to the aoidos tradition. Even after the oral poetry tradition had declined, the word aoidos was still used to refer to particularly outstanding legendary poets, as can be seen in Theocritus's Idylls.
