A form of instrumental music developed in the latter half of the 19th century. It is a series of free-form orchestral pieces made up of excerpts from incidental music to operas, ballets, or plays. Examples include Bizet's "Les Amoursées," Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," and Grieg's "Peer Gynt." 〘名〙 一九世紀後半以後発達した器楽曲の形式の一つ。オペラ、バレエ、あるいは劇の付帯音楽などから抜粋して一連の自由な形式の管弦楽曲として配列したもの。ビゼーの「アルルの女」、チャイコフスキーの「くるみ割り人形」、グリーグの「ペールギュント」など。
