A form of instrumental music developed in the latter half of the 19th century. It is a series of free-form orchestral pieces made up of excerpts from incidental music to operas, ballets, or plays. Examples include Bizet's "Les Amoursées," Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," and Grieg's "Peer Gynt."
