A Greek word meaning "young girl." In art history, it refers to a standing statue of a young girl from the Greek Archaic period. Many kore were produced between 650 and 480 BC. While koros from the same Archaic period were depicted nude, kore were almost always depicted clothed, with the important motifs being the drapery of the chiton, peplos, himation (outer garment) they wore, and the hair braided in various shapes, and they were richly painted. The best known are the nearly 20 kore excavated at the Athenian Acropolis, collectively known as the "Acropolis Kore." The most famous of these is the "Peplos Kore" (c. 540 BC, National Archaeological Museum, Athens), which is the only one wearing a Doric peplos, while all the other kore wear an Ionic chiton and himation. The Kore of Chios (c. 510 BC), wearing a pleated Ionic robe, is the best preserved statue and is also a good example of the Ionic style.CoreyPlease see the "Persephone" page.
