This Zen temple is located in the northwest of Yuhang County, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China. It is located on the northeastern peak of Mount Tianmu, and is one of the five Zen mountains of China. In the mid-8th century, during the reign of Emperor Daizong of the Tang Dynasty, the Guoyi Zen master Dokin entered the mountain and established a hermitage. Emperor Daizong was so impressed by Dokin's virtue that he bestowed him the title of Zen master, and in 769 (4th year of the Dareki era) a temple was built by imperial decree. During the Song Dynasty, Engo Kokugon and Daehui Song Gao lived here, and in 1180 (7th year of the Chunxi era), Daido Beppo entered the mountain by imperial decree of Emperor Xiaozong. Around this time, the temple was given the name Kosho Manjuzenji. After that, many famous monks, including Mujun Shihan, became the chief priests, and the temple became a large Rinzai sect dojo that greatly promoted its Zen style. It is said that the recipe for Keizanji miso was passed down from Keizanji. [Toshiaki Hirai] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
