The river originates in the northern mountains of Ireland. It flows south through the lowlands in the center of Ireland, connecting numerous glacial lakes, before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at Limerick. It is the longest river in the British Isles, with a total length of 370 km. Most of its course is navigable, and it is connected to Dublin on the east coast by a canal.
