...In the early 17th century, Omori Sokun (1570-1625), who came from the Soza school, wrote many musical books and spread the Sokun school, and in the latter half of the 17th century, his disciple, Sashida Kazuto, led the Sashida school. Three self-study books for beginners were published, namely, "Itochiku Shoshinshu" (1664) by Nakamura Sozo, "Dosho no Kiyoku" (1669) by Murata Sosei, and "Ikanobori" (1687, included in "Itochiku Daizen"), whose author is unknown, which shows the popularity of itosekiri at that time. From these, we can see that until the first half of the 17th century, itosekiri music was mainly solo pieces (called "te"), but in the latter half of the 17th century, accompaniment to popular songs (hayariuta) and dance songs, and ensembles with koto and shamisen (called "rankyoku") became popular. ...
