The name of a type of Shomyo (chanting). It is also said to be an abbreviation of Bainoku (singing hidden), or a transposition of Bashi (old woman's song). In China, it was an abbreviation of Bonbai (Sanskrit song), and was a general term for Buddhist vocal music in general. There are Nyoraibai (Tathagata song), also called Shidanuta in Tendai, and Ungabai (songs of the Buddha), the former being used for one memorial service, four memorial services, and the latter for two memorial services. It is sung solo by a singer, and the word Uta is said to mean "stop," and it serves to praise the Buddha at the beginning of a memorial service and to silence the audience. The act of chanting a song is called "Utahiki," and each character is chanted by stretching out the melody with a very long and ornamental melody.
