…He was born in Emesa, Syria, and was adopted by his cousin, Emperor Elagabalus, and became emperor after his death. He was under the guardianship of his mother, Julia Mamaea, and is said to have been highly praised as a wise emperor, working hard to cooperate with the Senate, to provide poverty relief, and to promote industry. However, despite defeating the Sassanid Empire on the eastern front (233), he adopted a policy of appeasement toward the Germanic peoples who had invaded Gaul, which caused the army to resent him and he was assassinated along with his mother. …
